SAN ANTONIO – Hard to believe, but we are halfway through the high school football season.
Several area schools and districts are on a bye this weekend, but zone play finally begins in District 28-6A.

Districts 28-5A and 26-6A have already started district play. Here are some of this Friday and Saturday’s key games.
Churchill vs. Reagan, 7:30 p.m. at Comalander Stadium
The Chargers and Rattlers are both 1-0 in district and 4-1 overall.
Churchill has won three straight including last week’s district opener against Lee, but has had trouble in the past against the rival Rattlers.
Reagan beat MacArthur last week and the team has challenged itself outside the SA area. Until someone beats them, they will be the favorites.
Taft vs Brandeis, 7:30 p.m. at Farris Stadium
Zone play begins with an intriguing matchup between the Raiders and Broncos.
Taft lost a heartbreaker to O’Connor last week, but proved it can hang with the top teams in the district.
Taft will need to show that consistency as they play a Brandeis team that is clicking after two losses to open the season.
The Broncos have won three straight, including victories over Champion and Madison.
Roosevelt vs. Madison, 7:30 p.m. at Heroes Stadium
Speaking of heartbreak, the Rough Riders lost last week to Johnson in a remarkable way, a hook-and-ladder touchdown with six seconds left in the game.
They will have to bounce back quickly, because Madison has had two weeks to prepare for them.
The Mavericks are 2-2, but both losses have come against tough competition -- Steele and Brandeis.
This result will go a long way as the district standings shape up.
Navarro vs. Central Catholic, 7:30 p.m. at Bob Benson Stadium
Navarro is 5-0 and finally cracked the Texas 4A Top 10 earlier this week.
The Panthers are very, very good and bring their high-powered offense to downtown San Antonio to take on Central Catholic.
The Buttons are 2-3, but have had chances to win every game with the exception of last week against Laredo Winn.
The Buttons have played a tough schedule, and it doesn’t get any tougher than Friday at Bob Benson Stadium.
Marshall vs. Holmes, 7:30 p.m. at Gustafson Stadium
The Rams are 2-3 after a winless 2015 season, but will now see if they can compete for a playoff spot.
Holmes went from one extreme to the other over the past two games, beating Harlandale in an emotional game and getting shut out by Stevens last week.
Interesting game as both teams look to make noise in district.
Edison vs. Brackenridge, 7 p.m. Saturday at Alamo Stadium
Not a Friday game, but probably the biggest in District 28-5A this weekend.
Brackenridge is 3-0 in district after an impressive win over Sam Houston.
A win this week against Edison would clear the way for a district title.
A win by Edison, 1-1 in 28-5A, would cause chaos atop the district rankings and make for an exciting second half of the season in the race for the playoffs.
