Becky Hammon's #25 retired after Stars game

Hammon played for Stars from 2007-2014

SAN ANTONIO – One of the greatest WNBA players of all time has received one of the greatest honors Saturday a player can get: her number retired.

“When you look at the other names up there, it is just so humbling. The greatness,” Becky Hammon said.

Hammon joined the WNBA in 1999 as a free agent and played for the New York Liberty until 2007. She was traded to the San Antonio in 2007 and quickly won over fans.

She retired in 2014 as the Stars’ all-time leader in career assists, 3-pointers and points per game.

Stars head coach Dan Hughes said the guard has done so much, and her future was just a bright.

Hammon was hired in the 2014 to be an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs. She is the first woman in NBA history to be a full-time assistant coach. She was also the first woman to be a full-time assistant coach in any of the four major professional sport (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL) in the U.S.

You know (in) San Antonio they only give stuff that they feel you have earned and is merited. So, again, I feel blessed and humbled that they chose to honor me in this way,” Hammon said. “They feel that my names deserves to be up there with those other guys.”
