The Doctor is In: Caring for the family at work & at home

SAN ANTONIO – Family is the No. 1 priority for Dr. Carlos Roberto Jaen.

After his father passed away from heart disease when he was young, Jaen said he became interested in medicine as a way to help others.

“Very early in my life I remember being interested in helping people,” he said.

Jaen started his career in medicine in New York, where he met his wife and started a family.

“I discovered family medicine and really fell in love with clinical medicine,” he said.

He moved to work at UT Health Science Center San Antonio after seeing the commitment the faculty in the Department of Family Medicine’s has for family health and wellness.

“The Health Science Center is truly dedicated to balancing health and discovering better ways to help people,” Jaen said.

Jaen and his wife now have seven children together. He said his greatest joy is spending time with his family.

“Eat together as a family,” Jaen advised. “Check in. Connect. Find ways in which you can express and live together in a way that makes sense.”

SA Live is featuring some of the UTHSC medical professionals who are changing lives in their segment called “The Doctor Is In.”
