Teen nearly drowns at Lady Bird Johnson Park

Friends riding bike when one falls into water

SAN ANTONIO – Three high school seniors, enjoying a Memorial Day bike ride, said they are still shaken up after one of them nearly drowned.

It happened on a trail at Lady Bird Johnson Park, just off of Nacogdoches Road after one of the teens slipped on the bridge.

"I could just hear people saying, "Help is on the way, you'll be fine, just hold on," said Dominic Zamudio.”And, I was like, don't fall in, don't fall in."

Zamudio and his two friends were bike riding when they ran into fast moving water on the trail.

Zamudio's friend, Nick Battaglia, was the first to hit the water and lost his bike.

That's when Zamudio got off his bike to try and see where Battaglia's bike went, but when he stepped over, he slipped.

"I pulled my body up as fast as I could," said Zamudio. "And, I just kept it up so, the water wouldn't start going in my nose. I fell over and it was bashing my face and I couldn't breathe."

Zamudio said his other friend, Luis Garay, told him he was going to get a branch.

"The minute he leaves, that's when the water threw me over," said Zamudio. "I'm like nope, nope, nope and I'm starting to panic and losing grip and you can't grab anything so, I pulled my knee against the little ledge that's there."

With his leg pinned against the concrete, Zamudio held on as best he could.

"I just stayed there and waited," said Zamudio. "So they called for help and so, I waited until help arrived and it was the longest wait of my life."

Fire crews did arrive and rescued Zamudio from the raging waters.

Zamudio was a little shocked a little sore, but OK. Now, he and his friends are warning everyone to stay away from fast-moving water.

"Look before you take a sharp turn because there might be a current like that right around here and it will take you," said Battaglia.

"And, don't challenge the current," said Garay. "Do not challenge it."

All three seniors are now safe and getting ready to graduate from Churchill High School later this week.
