Newly renovated convention center hosts first event

City says event capacity not possible before expansion

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio's newly renovated Henry B. González Convention Center is hosting the Texas Music Educators Association for its first large convention since major updates were unveiled last month.

The convention, which has met in San Antonio for 31 years, is in town again Wednesday through Saturday.

The city said the event was about to outgrow the capacity of convention center before this year's expansion with 26,000 people expected to attend.

“It seems only fitting that the first major convention to enjoy our new center is one that has meant so much to San Antonio for 31 years,” said Casandra Matej, executive director of the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The convention center grew to 1.6 million square feet, including the largest ballroom in Texas at 54,000 square feet. The price tag for the updates was $325 million.

“The convenience of obtaining over 5,500 hotel rooms within walking distance of the convention center, mostly along the river, is an added bonus,” said Robert Floyd, TMEA executive director.
