SAN ANTONIO – The Edgewood Independent School District honored fallen soldiers on Memorial Day by unveiling a special monument at Kennedy High School.
The monument, the fourth on campus, pays tribute to all Americans killed in combat and to all living men and women in uniform.
"They are still losing their lives for our country, and it is important that they be recognized just like every soldier that's given their life in previous wars," said Terry Guerrero, whose husband graduated from the high school in 1967, and is among 10 classmates killed in Vietnam.
Guerrero and others helped get the monument erected.
"Mainly because we don’t want anyone to think, like, 'They're gone and that's it,'" she said. "No, we want them to be remembered forever."
Roger Saucedo's nephew, a 29-year-old father of two, was killed when his Humvee went over a roadside bomb during his second tour of duty to Iraq.
"He was not supposed to go on patrol that day," Saucedo said. "But he volunteered because the guy that was supposed to go on patrol was sick, so that was my nephew, always volunteering."
A roll call was held for those who lost their lives lost in combat and those who are still missing in action.
