Driver of suspected stolen truck arrested in SA after 50-mile chase

Man, truck traveled from Pennsylvania to San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – A man who led sheriff’s deputies and police on a chase from Guadalupe County into the San Antonio city limits has been arrested. The chase Friday morning ended some 50 miles from where it began.

James Keith, a public information officer for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, said a Guadalupe County deputy first tried to stop the driver around 6:30 a.m. after noticing the pickup he was driving was stolen.

That led to a chase along Interstate 10, and when it crossed into Bexar County, BCSO deputies became involved, he said.

“We were fortunate that this individual kept the speeds low. He managed to avoid all the high traffic areas,” Keith said, speaking of the driver who, at one point, appeared to be headed toward busy downtown morning traffic on I-10.

The suspect, instead, got off the highway and onto San Antonio city streets.

“Once the truck got into the San Antonio city limits, we were able to get some assistance from the sky with help from DPS and SAPD,” Keith said.

A group of deputies and police officers managed to box in the suspect’s truck at a gas station in the 3800 block of Fredericksburg Road.  There, they took the man into custody.

Keith said investigators determined both the driver and truck had traveled to the area from Pennsylvania. The truck had been reported stolen in that state, he said.

"We're still looking at some motives,” Keith said. “There are some early reports that he may have been stopped in Pennsylvania, may have been in possession of drugs."

The man, whose name was not released immediately, will face charges in Texas related to the stolen vehicle and the chase itself, he said.
