Burglar bars delay officers entering home where 2 men were shot

Police unsure which man opened fire

SAN ANTONIO – Burglar bars on the door of a Southwest Side home delayed San Antonio police officers from entering after someone called for help.

Officers received the 911 call just after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and went to a home in the 200 block of Briggs Avenue to investigate.

"Upon their arrival, they heard some struggling going on inside, they could hear yelling," Capt. Cris Andersen of the San Antonio Police Department said. "They knocked on the door and they asked to be let in, but they didn't hear any response."

Andersen said a few minutes later, officers realized they had to get inside immediately. They heard one person inside calling out for help, saying he'd been shot.

"We couldn't get in the doors because they're burglar-barred shut in the rear and then fortified in the front," Andersen said. "So we went around to an east-side window, peered into that window and we could see one individual lying on the ground just inside a restroom."

Officers broke in through the window and discovered there actually were two people who were shot, he said. One man suffered three gunshot wounds and was unable to tell officers what happened. Andersen said the other man, whose injuries were not as serious, was not cooperating with officers.

Both people were taken to University Hospital.

Investigators early on did not know which man fired the shots, but they don't suspect anyone else was involved in the shooting. Andersen said they found two guns inside the home.

Anderson said at one point, there may have been three people inside the home. The person who initially called 911 was a woman, while both of the people who were found wounded were men, Andersen said.

"We'd like to talk to that woman," Andersen said. "Hopefully when we find her, she'll be able to give us a little bit more information about how those individuals ended up in the house."
