Bexar deputy charged with credit card abuse, theft

Laura Ramos, 43, arrested Thursday afternoon

SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County Sheriff's Office detention deputy was arrested Thursday and charged with credit card abuse and theft by a public servant.

Laura Ramos, 43, has been assigned to the detention division since 2006, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Ramos, using an inmate's credit card information, agreed to deposit $500 into the inmate's account at the Texas Department of Corrections.

The Sheriff's Office said Ramos never deposited the money into the inmate's account. Instead, she is believed to have charged a total of $2,903 to the complainant’s bank account, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate this sort of behavior and apparent abuse of power," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Ramos is on administrative leave as the Sheriff's Office begins the process of firing her.
