Gelato becoming a favorite in San Antonio

Flavor Favs: South Alamode Panini & Gelato Company

SAN ANTONIO – For the past year Josh Biffle and his wife have been making authentic gelato and panini at South Alamode Panini & Gelato Company.

Biffle learned how make the sweet treats while living in Italy. There he went to culinary school and interned at a gelatoria.

After moving back to Texas, he wanted to see how well gelato would do in the Alamo City.

"Started off at the farmer's market just to kind of test the waters," Biffle said. "Then the next year we opened up our brick and mortar."

That brick and mortar can be found at the Blue Star Arts Complex off South Alamo.

The gelato, made in various flavors, is made daily. Up to 16 flavors are available a day.

While some might confuse gelato with ice cream, there is actually a big difference. Gelato has less fat, is served at a warmer temperature and the texture of gelato is creamier and smoother than ice cream.

Whether you are stopping by for a panini, a cup of gelato or both, you won't be disappointed at this family-friendly establishment.
